Split Enz's song Dirty Creature is a metaphor for mental illness, but a phrase in it (Dirty Water) gave me the title for a story about a not at all metaphorical monster, so we steal where we see fit, yes? Since I'm so invested in Magnus Archives right now, I decided to include at least a couple of creepy songs in this year's offerings. So have White Valiant, an unsettling creation where you're not quite sure what's going on, but you suspect that maybe it's not good?

Another gentle love song, this time from Split Enz.

A sweet little love song, which has something Blairish about the lyrics to my TS ears. A nice little snapshot of Cuba Mall in the nineties too. :-)

This is a liltingly gorgeous song, but I’m always a tad ambivalent about it because I have issues with Chris Knox’s voice. Sorry Chris. Since I only know of two covers, (one Aussie, one an arrangement that I’m not completely down with) you still get the original, because this is such a great song.

I don’t know if NZ musicians write proportionately more songs on watery themes because we are so tied to beaches and lakes and the sea here or if I’m just drawn to songs on the topic. But have some Jan Hellriegel anyway.
